Over the past few decades, teaching methods have more and more combined innovative teaching techniques with more traditional methods. The Internet has joined this dramatic unfolding of revolutionary teaching styles with online learning. This has become increasingly popular with students of all ages.

Online learning has opened up new doors to families who home school their children. They can now have access to full curriculum materials and students can work their way through their grade level online. This also helps students who are returning to school to finish their high school diploma. Many states, such as Missouri, offer courses taught by online instructors where reading materials, homework and class discussions are easily accessible with a few keystrokes.

Teachers can also set up a computer-based classroom where the Internet becomes a ready vehicle to handle all of the basic tasks that students do each day. Children have responded very favorably to this type of learning and are in some cases found to learn better this way. When doing research online, students are taught how to find responsible sources of information from the huge number of resources available. In one sitting they can visit such places as the Library of Congress and the National Archives without having to leave their desk.

Many college students are now completing their degrees through online campuses. This saves them the costs of having to commute to a school and allows them to work at their own pace around their schedule. Online learning has opened numerous opportunities and is quickly changing the face of American education.
